Collaborator is a collaborative R&D project partially funded by the European Commission in the framework of the Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme, Key Action IV Essential Technologies and Infrastructures.

The major goal of the project is the realization of a distributed software environment to provide a shared workspace supporting the activities of virtual teams in a mobile environment. Based on a novel approach Collaborator will integrate standard Web technologies with Agent technologies enhancing the classic Web communication mechanisms to support synchronous sharing of applications.

Another goal of the project is to set up a trial environment to explore and validate the benefits of integrating Collaborator with emerging technologies such us: 2.5, 3G networks and terminals, and new generation of home appliances. Validation of the Collaborator distributed environment is planned in two industrial sectors of high relevance for Europe: the construction and telecommunications sectors.

The Collaborator project started in November 2001 and will have a duration of 24 months.
